Robert location:
Robert (location):
In this lesson I had to take pictures that represent Robert Mapplethorpes work. However this lesson was different to the one above because the pictures had to be taken on location and not in the studio.
If I was to do this lesson again I would focus more on taking pictures of people because thats what Robert' photographs mainly were.
In this first photo of the flower you can see that the flower itself is in focus but the background is not. This is because Robert made the flower the main object in the photo by using a plain black or white background but because I had to take the images on location I could not do this. If I was to take this image again I would experiment with the different angles I could have taken the image from.
In the second image of the hand you can see that there is contrast between what is in the image and what is not. This is like Robert's image of half of the body and then the hand and arm. If I was to take this image again I could include more of the arm as well as the hand and also show the hand coming out from all different angles of the picture.
Robert:
Robert (studio):
If I was to do this lesson again I would also use a black background because many of Robert's photographs where against a black background.
In the first image you can see that the person is not posed at all, just looking directly at the camera with a straight face. This is how Mapplethorpe's photos where they were simple and no one was ever positioned in a posed/set up way. If I was to take this image again I would just include the face and the top area/shoulders of the person against a black background so it looks like her head is floating in the air like one of Robert's photographs.
This next image shows just a section of the body and the main focus of the photograph is the arm and the hand of the person. This links to Robert's photography because one of his images show a section of the top half of someone's body and then the arm and hand across the other side of the image. If I was to take this image again I would take it in the same way/same angle but try not to include as much of the background.
free shoot:
Free shoot:
In this lesson I had to take photographs of anything I liked in the studio but I had to use a white and a black background for my images.
If I was to do this lesson again I would experiment more with the types of photographs I could have taken. For example: I could have taken a variety of different photos in one shoot.
This first image with the white background shows contrast between what is in the picture and what is not because of half the body only being shown in the photograph. There is also contrast between the black chair and the white background, the black chair and the white clothing. If I was to take this photo again I would take it will less head room at the top of the photograph and maybe experiment with different lighting.
In the next image of the black background there are two pictures within one. This is because I have edited the two photos together on photoshop. I have taken this photo to show emotions and create the feeling of a persons shadow or someone watching behind you. If I was to take this image again I would use the main image at the front of the photo showing a happy face and then the one behind more serious and straight face to show someone hiding their emotions.

contrast two:
Contrast two (opposite):
If I was to do this lesson again I would take more photos that show contrast within the single photo and not as many that I have to edit together to show contrast. This is because I think the images look a lot better.
In this first image of the back of the head, you can see that the hair colour is different. This is showing the contrast between the two colours through opposites. If I was to take this image again I would take it inside because then the wind will not effect my final pictures, as you can see in this photo the hair is moving in the wind.
contrast one:
Contrast one:
In this lesson I had to take pictures to show contrast. This was through dark and light areas within the pictures.
If I was to do this lesson again I would take less photos and concentrate of taking photos that show clear contrast because in my photos I was very unsure on how to show contrast through my images so I needed to break the meaning of the word down in order to take better images.
In this photograph of the plant, I have edited it to make it black and white so it is showing the clear contrast between the darker grey/black area and then the leaves and the background being a lighter/grey area. If I was to take this image again I would try to get the leaves on the flower more in focus.
This next image of the two leaves shows the contrast between the darker leave and the lighter leave but also shows contrast between the colours of the leaves because one is brown and one is green. If I was to take this image again I would change the background because I do not like the way you can see the line in the bench across the picture. I would also maybe change the angle of the image.
walk two:
Walk two:
In this lesson I had to go for another walk outside of the college to take pictures that would link and show 'quite reflection'. This was for the competition we was entering.
If I was to do this lesson again I would take more pictures with a reflection in them because I think this is the clearest way to show 'quite reflection'. This is because I found if hard to say how my photos linked to 'quite reflection'.
The second image of the birds flying represents 'quite reflection' because it makes the birds seem very small and they are entering the big wide world (sky). The birds represent freedom and when looking at the image you can clearly see that the birds are free which makes you think of freedom when looking at this image. I like this image because it looks like the birds are not real, its almost as if the birds are silhouettes. If i was to take this image again I would try to capture the birds moving a little bit earlier.
walk one:
Walk one:
In this lesson I had to go for a walk outside of the college and go to many different areas to take many different pictures that would fit into the formal elements.
If I was to do this walk again I would take more images that are not as close up so I can see the whole of the image and not just a small section of it.
In this image of the trees I think the angle of the photograph taken is very good because you can see the tip of the trees and see then going upwards towards the sky. The use of the sun on the trees makes the image look a lot better. If i was to take this image again I would try to get more of the tree at the bottom in the picture so you can see the whole length.
The second image of the stones show the formal element shape. You cam see that there is a variety of different types of shapes within the stones. I think this image isn't one of the best that I have taken while on the walk but it is a good picture to show the formal elements. If I was to take this photo again I would take the picture at different angles and maybe try to zoom into the stones a bit more to show the detail on the stones.
studio two:
Studio two:
During this lesson I had to collect a range of different autumn leaves. I then went into the studio to photograph them. I did this by arranging the leaves in different ways and taking many different photos.
If I was to do this lesson again I would collect more leaves so I could take a bigger variety of pictures. I would also experiment more with the use of different angles.
This image is the first photo of autumn leaves that I took. I really like this image because I think you can see all the detail in the leaves that you wouldn't normally notice. I also like how the bright green leaf looks against the brown leaf. If I was to take this image again I would take it from a different angle to see what one looks best.
In this image there are many leaves of all different colours. I think this image is one of the best that i have taken of autumn leaves. This is because the arrangement of leaves is different to how you would normally ever see a group of leaves. The different colours against each other also make the image a lot more interesting.
studio one:
Studio one:
In this lesson I had to go in the studio to take my pictures. I had to take pictures that show the formal element of form. I did this by using different brightness of light and then moving positions of the models to either away from the light or towards the light.
If I was to do this lesson again I would experiment with capturing more images of form on the clothes and other parts of the body rather than just the face.
In this image you can clearly see the use of tone on the face because one half is darker than the other. I really like this image however I have got some of the background in at the side that I do not want in my image. Therefore when taking more images in the studio I will have to make sure i am only getting the plain background in the image and not anything around the background paper.
This image of tone shown on clothes is one of the best I have taken in the studio. You can see that one half of the clothes and hair are darker and the other side is a lot lighter. I really like this image and if i was to take more photos of form in the studio I would experiment with the different types of form shown on clothes and the body.
texture:
Texture:
In this lesson I had to take pictures of texture. This could either be rough, soft, bumpy, rubbery ect.
If I had to do this lesson again I would get more images of close up textures instead of focussing on the actually structure of the picture itself.
I like this image because i think it shows detailed texture. However next time I would take the picture close up of the tree so you can see the texture rather than focussing on it looking like a tree trunk.
This next image is one of my favourite image I have taken. I think this is because it shows a different type of pattern rather than the simple and easy one. I also like the angle of this picture because it shows the texture part of the wheel to be in focus and the other parts blurred. if I was to take this image again I would zoom into the wheel and concentrate on just the texture part.
reflection:
Reflection:
During this lesson I had to take photographs that show reflection. This could be shown in mirrors, cars, windows ect.
If I was to do this lesson again i would take pictures of reflection in the mirror because I didnt take any during this lesson. I would also try to experiment with the different shapes and sizes of reflections. For example I could including a whole body reflection.
This image is one of my favourite pictures that I took during this lesson. This is because I think the reflection in very clear. If i took this image again I would try to focus the image more on the reflection itself rather than include so much of the background.
I think this image is the best one out of all my images taken during this lesson. I think this is because you can see the actually image itself and then the reflection in the window. If i did take this image again I would experiment with different angles of taking the picture.
lines:
Lines:
This lesson I had to take photographs that show how lines are used in photography. This could be lines in objects, buildings and flowers ect.
The photograph I took of the blue door is my favourite because I think it shows a good example of the formal element. I also like the angle of the image because it is in the centre. If I was to take this picture again then I would try to take it from a side angle to see which one looks better.
I like this image because I think it shows a different example of lines used in photography compared to my other images that are mainly straight lines. To improve this image I would change the positions of the feet and maybe take it from a low angle.
Colour:
Colour:
In this lesson I had to show the use of colour through photography. This can be shown through as many colours as you like. I found that colour was quite hard to take pictures of because everything is shown in colour. However i knew it wouldn't be that simple.
If i was to do this lesson again i would take more photos of different colours placed next to each other because they looked a lot better and showed good examples of the contrast between the colours.
My two favourite images are the purple flowers against the green bush and then the white window on the wooden building. If I was to do the flower picture again i would try to get more of the flower in focus because not all of it focussed. For the image of the window i would try to include more of the wood or take it from a different angle to see what one is better.
Blurring:
Blurring:
while in this lesson I had to that pictures of blurring. This is to show movement, you can not see this from the eye it can only been seen on camera. I learnt the two ways that blurring can be show, its either movement of the object or movement of the camera.
If I had to do this lesson again i would take a lot more pictures because most of mine that i took did not work out and you couldn't see hardly any of the pictures.
I think my best image is the one of the three people standing and walking in the corridor, i created the movement by moving the camera. If I was to do this image again I would concentrate on the person standing taking a photography rather than the two walking because it would look a lot better.
There were many of my images that didn't work as well as I would have hoped. For example: the photograph of a person during a movement(jumping). I think this is because the movement made was too fast causing the blurring to cover the whole image and not focus the object.
pattern:
Pattern:
In this lesson I had to take pictures of patterns. The patterns I had to take could either be natural or man-made patterns.
If I was to do this lesson again I would try to get an equal amount of both natural and man-made. This is because I feel most of my images were man-made patterns. If i had a equal amount it would help to show my clear understanding of both types of patterns
I also like the photo I took of the back of the head of hair. I think this image shows the use of pattern because the wavy lines are repeated over and over in the same way. However I do feel that this image more supports the formal element of lines and is therefore not one of my best images for pattern.
shape:
Shape:
During this lesson I had to take photographs that show shape used in photography. This consisted of many different objects because they seemed to be the best to show clear but different shapes. This formal element is my favourite so far because I feel you can experiment in many different ways and notice different shapes that you would not normally associate with shape.
Later on in this lesson we then took photographs of peoples shadows because it shows the outline of the persons shape.
If I had to do this lesson again I would focus on different shapes on objects because I have found that they look the best.
My best image that I took to show shape was the picture of the shape. I think this is because its not a normally what you would think a shape is, its very different. If I was to do this again I would move the chair to a plain background so the chair is the main focus.
One of the images that i took did not work. This image was emergency button and the press to exit button. This was because they was next to each other and it was hard to take the photos seperate without including the other one. Therefore if I was going to take this image again I would take one image of both of them together.
Depth:
Depth:
While in this lesson i had to take photos of objects, buildings that show depth. I found this formal element very hard to take pictures of because I felt that a lot of the images would have looked the same. Therefore I didn't end up having a lot of images because i wanted to get a variety of different types of depth but it was hard to find.
If i was to do this lesson again i would certainly take more photos because then i would have more to choose from when picking the best ones. My work i produced was very limited to choose from. Therefore I think that y images for depth are not as good as they could have been.
The image i have taken of the brick wall does show clear example of depth because the lines on the bricks seem to get smaller as they get further away. I really like this angle of the photograph. If i had to take this image again i would try get more of the end of the wall in focus.
My image of the drinks machine didn't really show depth because I didn't take it from the correct angle. However now thinking about this image it wouldn't even work if i changed the angle because the sizes of the bottles are all different. Therefore no matter how I took the image the bottles wouldn't seem to be getting smaller as they get further away.
Form:
Form;
In this lesson I had to take photographs of form. Form is shown through the use of light creating shadows that makes the 2D images become 3D. I had to take my photographs with the object and then its shadow so you could clearly see it was 3D.
If I had to do this formal element again i would try to take photographs of shadows on the face that help to show that it is 3D. This is because my attempts to this did not really work because the shadows were not clear enough.
When taking the photograph of the disability button it was very hard to capture the shadow to show that the button was 3D but I do like the angle of this image that it was taken. However to make this image better I would have to change the angle, even though I feel it looks good, it doesn't show form as well as i would have hoped it would.

In todays lesson I will be finishing work from my personal progress check. I will be separating my work diaries into the ten separate formal elements. I will also be adding a summary of each photographers work into my research log.
