definition of texture used in photography

Texture

Dictionary definition: The feel and appearance or consistency of a surface or substance.

Describing words:

  • rough
  • rigid
  • bumpy
  • soft
  • hard
  • lumpy
  • smooth

This image of a tree shows a hard and smooth texture because of the lines in the tree would make the texture seem bumpy. This is because the lines form cracks and then create lumps because the texture will no longer be flat and smooth.
The tinny objects in this photo would have a very soft and rubbery, maybe slimy texture because they seem to look like bubbles. However because there are so many of the little objects the texture could also become quite hard.
This image of the brick wall shows a bumpy and hard texture because as you can see from the image the bricks look like they are coming out of the wall. Therefore if you was to touch the wall and move along the wall the feeling would be very lumpy and bumpy.
The texture in this photo would also be bumpy and lumpy because the little shapes that come above the surface of the other silver layer shown in the image. Without the little shapes in the picture the texture would be smooth.

My definition: Texture is the way something feels when you touch it.
