definition of tone used in photography

Dictionary definition:  Tone consists of different shaded areas from white, grey, black. It can also consist of dark shades against lighter shades with little grey, shown from the light.

 This images shows tone through the different shades of darker and lighter areas. The car itself if a darker tone and then the floor/grass is a lighter shade.
 This picture shows tone through black and white. The darker areas are black and the lighter areas are either grey or white depending on the use of light.
 In this picture the lighter area of tone are shown from the light making the area white and light grey. The darker areas on the building are black tones.
This image shows the tone on the face. His glasses are dark shades of tone and his face and teeth are lighter shades of tone.

My definition: tone is light and dark shading.
