Formal elements are lines, shape, colour, patterns, depth, form, tone and blurring. These are elements of style that a photographer would use in composition(the arrangement of the formal elements) of their pictures. We use formal element in photography because its everyday life that we do not normally notice.
Formal elements are important because they help to show the eye what we cant see. For example: blurring, the camera can capture the movement of an object. However we cannot see this from the eye.

The formal element shape is the outline of an object that forms any structure(shape). This could be shown in a number of ways. For example: cubed, circles, circular, round, square.
When using colour as a formal element in photography it is shown through the different colours used in one picture. This could either be shown with two colours or more next to each other.
The formal element pattern is a group of shapes that are repeated. This can either be man-made or natural. Man-made and be shown by the patterns in a wall (brick wall) and natural could be the patterns in a flower.
When using the formal element depth it is shown through the objects in the picture getting smaller and smaller as they get further away. This is called converging parallel.
The formal element form is shown through shadows from the sun light making a 2D object seem 3D because everything 3D must have a shadow.

The formal element blurring is shown through movement. This can only be seen by a camera not by the eye. This can be shown by the movement of the camera itself or the movement of an object.
